overview
Cusco City, located at 3,400 meters above sea level, is situated in a lush alluvial valley fed by multiple rivers in the heart of South America’s Central Peruvian Andes. The city was constructed and remodelled in the 15th century by Inca Pachacuteq (Tito Cusi Inca Yupanqui) following a pre-Inca occupancy phase of over 3,000 years, and became the capital of the Tawantinsuyu Inca Empire.
The Inca Imperial City was built as a sophisticated urban center with different religious and governmental duties that were precisely defined, dispersed, and ordered. The religious and government structures were accompanied by exclusive royal abodes, forming an unprecedented symbolic urban compound that demonstrates stone construction technology with exceptional style and structural properties, such as the Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, the Acllahuasi, the Sunturcancha, the Cusicancha, and a series of very finely finished buildings that shape the Inca compound as an indivisible unity of Inca urbanism.
